Above and Beyond To Serve and Protect Book 1 edition by Kathryn Shay Literature Fiction eBooks

I enjoyed Above and Beyond but it wasn't quite up to Kathryn Shay's standard in my humble opinion. I did enjoy it, though. I won't restate the plot because it's very clear from the blurb and from other reviews. I loved that Belle and Nick found their hea, but there were times that she made poor decisions that were out of character for a mother protecting her twin sons. For instance (no spoilers) the 6-year old twins were invited to a party and rather than make a decision based on their safety, Belle made a choice based on their desire to play with friends. She was too smart for that and got stuck on "we have to go because I accepted the invitation." Not really. Other times, Belle seemed a bit petulant, which again was out of character imho. Yes, she gets a few passes because of the circumstances that she was dealing with, but she was a strong woman and some of her reactions would lead the reader to believe otherwise. There was also an inconsistency that nagged me. Whitney's partner Max was named Max Blackwell and John Maxwell at various points in the book. This should be a simple error to catch and fix during the editing process. The good, for me, is that the characters were relatable even if the White House setting (for part of the book) was not. The family ties ran deep for both Nick and Belle and they were a good match based on that alone. The twins were simply adorable and the settings were well described. Even though I didn't love this book, I trust the author sufficiently that I just purchased #2 and I look forward to reading it.

Above and Beyond To Serve and Protect Book 1 edition by Kathryn Shay Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Mama Marino must have felt like Mrs. Ryan (of Saving Private Ryan fame) sending all of her adult children off to serve their country in one way or another. Nerve-wracking to be sure, but then Mrs. Marino did not suffer to the degree that Mrs. Ryan did.

Imagine being the lead agent in the President's Personal Detail of Secret Service Agents. Got that one? Feels pretty good, eh? Now, imagine being asked to guard the President's sister and her kids. There must have been an aggravating sense of let-down, to be given such a...mundane assignment. Nick Marino technically could have said no, but then it was the POTUS who was asking.

One day, while being pressed for information from a friend of hers, the President's sister (Isabelle), blurts out that Nick is her new 'ah-give-him-a-try' boyfriend. Then they have to make a good show. We can tell where this will lead. But Isabelle certainly didn't expect to have to wake Nick in a panic one night because of the strange man at the kitchen window, and to have Nick bound out of bed with his gun, but without a stitch of clothing on. Yeah, everyone knows things are going to happen after that! ;)

So Nick and Isabelle spend most of the book trying to ignore their feelings for each other. They fail. There are multiple close calls for 'fireworks'. There is even one complete 'encounter' that is descriptive without being offense. Nick even takes her home to meet the folks, but that's more because increasing dangerous things have been happening to Isabelle; Nick has to find a place for 'Belle' to be kept safe and no one, with the exception of his brothers and their female cousin (who is undercover as the boys' nanny, well, and the President, of course, know where they are).

Above and Beyond is the first of five books in the "To Serve and Protect" series. Some of the younger Marinos (and their cousin, surnamed Dwyer) (Gabe and Connor, notably) have some individual histories that I'd like to know more about; but I imagine that is taken care of in 'their' books later in the series.

Isabelle doesn't like Nick ordering her around at first, so there is some antagonism at first. But that ends when the SUV in which they are driving gets run off the road...with the twins inside as well. Everyone is on highest alert after that. I can definitely understand Isabelle's reaction, though. We Mama Bears stick together.

I loved the interactions of both the older and younger members of the Marino family. Mama and Pa definitely care for and worry about their sons and niece (who was raised by them). They work together quite well. There are some misunderstandings amongst the younger generation that will need to be fully hashed out at some point, but they have each others' backs.

And I especially liked Isabelle's twin sons, Jamie and Ryan, and the fact that Ms. Shay emphasized the differences in their personalities. Most people comment on all the ways twins are alike; it's great to have a different viewpoint.

Above and Beyond will be enjoyed by fans of the romance and suspense genres, as well as the combined 'romantic suspense' genre.
Above and Beyond To Serve and Protect Book 1 is by Kathryn Shay. This is the first book of the series about the Secret Service and the Marino family. The Marino family has three Secret Service personnel in the family and two doctors. This makes for a very stressful and eventful life for them all. Kathryn looks at the decisions a Secret Service man has to deal with when deciding there the rest of his life is going in this book.
Nick Marino is perfectly happy in his position protecting the President of the United State. He has his eye on the directorship of the Secret Service and has a clear picture of how he will get there. He is not happy when the President temporarily assigns him to protect his sister Isabelle. Isabelle has been receiving threatening notes but does not want Secret Service protection for herself or her sons. When she sees her brother is serious, she agrees to have one agent assigned to protect her. She does not want a large group around her which would fan the gossip in the small town she lives in. Nick is not happy being assigned to be her protector. How will they work this out?
Kathryn Shay writes books about heroes and women who are strong, caring and independent. This first book in a series is about secret service agents, their beliefs and their need to serve their country and the president. This story is about the president's sister and the secret service agents assigned to keep her and her children safe. She is being threatened and her brother, the President, fears it is because of him. This story is about the threats and fears and dangers faced by those who serve, but also by their families and those who serve.

The characters are real, the situations are plausible and frightening and the love and support is moving. Thoroughly enjoyable read.
