Synposis: The story starts with crop circles that magically appear in Farmer Johnson’s field. Gilbert Sullivan, a young Nebraska boy, often has unusual dreams right before the crop circles. One night, awakened by the returning dream, he hears his parents arguing while investigating a mysterious light through his telescope and makes a wish to be taken far away. Curious, Gilbert sneaks out to discover the source of the light and stumbles into a Martian girl sitting in a crop circle. Farmer Johnson also investigates the strange light, and thinking that Gilbert and Aoléon are vandals, he chases them. But they sprint to Aoléon’s saucer and escape only to be pursued by the U.S. Air Force. With some death defying flying they slip pass the Air Force and land safely on Mars. The graphics that accompanied this book were amazing. They reminded me of picture stills of an animated cartoon. They are very appealing to the eye and were placed strategically throughout the novel. Gilbert's urge to flee the ugliness of home and thoughts of divorce was understandable. Even though I was an adult when my parents parted ways, it wasn't a smooth mindset adjustment. I did think some of the words used were too sophisticated for the target age group but otherwise was a cute story that kids will enjoy reading.

Aoleon The Martian Girl Part 1 First Contact An Exciting and Funny Middle Grade Science Fiction Adventure Kids Book for Ages 912 edition by Brent LeVasseur Children eBooks Reviews
I don’t know about you, but I love anything in the realm of science fiction or fantasy. And if you can add in some humor all the better. Aoleon The Martian Girl Part 1 by Brent LaVasseur gives me both of these things in a short package designed to be shared with kids between 3rd and 6th great. This is great because it means that I can share my favorite genre with my students and someday, when my daughter is old enough, her as well.
Gilbert is a young boy that lives next to a farm. He has been having some interesting dreams. One night he wakes up and sees something out his bedroom window. When he decides to go investigate he meets a girl from the 4th planet named Aoleon who can read his mind. They go on fun adventures and have a grand time. The story is well written and engaging. I would gladly read the second installment with my class when it comes out.
From the characters’ names to flying cows and Three Stooges-style slapstick, I think the 9-11 year old crowd will find this book humorous and entertaining.
While some might try to find a deeper message hidden within this story, this was not my take on it. Yes, the main character’s parents argue and he doesn’t like it, but that happens in every household and I didn’t see this as the impetus for his outer space adventure. This was a light and funny story, not some dark "growing up in a bad environment" story.
The reason I think this story will appeal to the aforementioned age group is that kids that age are perpetually bored by everything, and I see Gilbert’s easy acceptance of Aoléon and her origins as fitting in with the whole looking for something “not boring” to do quest most kids have 24/7. I don’t think he was running away from a bad home situation, as has been suggested by other reviewers.
As far as the somewhat political descriptions of Mars go, I think this will also appeal to kids and they will completely understand it. After all, kids are watched closely and controlled by those they might think of as dictators, i.e. parents, guardians, teachers, etc. and are constantly looking for ways around that control, even resorting to lobbying for more democratic treatment.
The action scenes were fast-paced and funny, and the addition of flying cows in the mix was just plain wonderful!
The author does a good job of making the alien girl seem overly smart (kids who are science nerds will love her), while still keeping her in the kid realm. He also gives Gilbert a suitable bit of ignorance but couples it with a willingness to learn and accept things as they come at him.
The humor is entertaining for kids and most adults, the illustrations are great and pretty funny, too. It's my opinion that kids will love this book and look forward to the next in the series.
Aoleon The Martian Girl Part 1 by Brent LaVasseur is a delightful science fiction story written for children between 3rd and 6th grade. In it we meet Gilbert, a young boy who lives next to a farm that has been getting regular crop circles. The farmer thinks it’s a bunch of troublemakers but we find out that he is wrong when Gilbert gets curious in the middle of the night. When he goes out he meets a girl named Aoleon from the 4th planet.
This story is a lot of fun and has enough interest to it that you could read it with your children and I might even recommend it to my students. The pictures a bright and colorful, the fonts on the chapter titles are fun, the characters and the plot are engaging and I would gladly read the 2nd installment.
If you love science fiction and want a book to enjoy with your children, or if you have a child who is a science fiction lover then you should definitely pick up this book.
