Book One in the bestselling Train Through Time Series, a historical time travel romance series set in and around Seattle in the early 1900s.

Also available in a boxed set, the Train Through Time Series Boxed Set, Books 1-3.

College teacher Ellie Standish thinks she's on a sleek modern train heading to a conference on women's studies in Seattle, but she awakens from a night's doze to find herself on a bizarre historical train full of late Victorian era reenactors who refuse to come out of character. When the leader of the group—handsome, green-eyed Robert Chamberlain—finally convinces her the date is indeed 1901, a skeptical Ellie rejects any eccentric theories of time travel and presumes she is smack dab in the middle of a very interesting historical dream. She turns the directorial reins of her dream over to the smitten and willing Robert, only to realize that dreams cannot last forever. Someday, she must wake up to reality, though Ellie no longer has any idea what reality is. She only knows that Robert must play an important part in her future. But how can he...if he's only a figment of her imagination or worse yet...a man who belongs to an era long past?

A Train Through Time Train Through Time Series Book 1 edition by Bess McBride Romance eBooks

This book starts, I'm assuming, in current day say 2010 or 2011. From there the main character Ellie Standish travels to 1901. It is a little boring about half way through the book but picks up from there and is really hard to come up with an ending. You know she will probably stay with Robert but how she's going to get there is a mystery. The writer is very well researched for that time period making the book extremely believeable for a time travel. I enjoyed it and will definitely read more offerings from this writer. Would recommend to any reader who loves time travel books.

A Train Through Time Train Through Time Series Book 1 edition by Bess McBride Romance eBooks Reviews

I wanted to like this, I really did. I hoped it would be a light-hearted and enjoyable story to pass an afternoon. Luckily it was free, I don't recommend paying anything for it. I try to be open minded, but if you write historical fiction, you need to do research. Real research, don't just look at a couple advertisements and assume that's how people actually looked at that time. Just for the record, zippers were not used in women's dresses in 1901.

I keep trying these time-travel kind of books, because the idea seems so fun. Unfortunately, the stories always center around a main character, who is invariably so stupid I'd like to beat on them myself. The superior, condescending attitudes, the rude behavior, reckless disregard of any rules. Then they're surprised when they get trouble or the other characters are offended by their behavior.

For a supposed college professor, Ellie seems remarkably stupid and completely unable to adjust to her surroundings. She also claims to have an interest in this time period, but apparently no knowledge of the dress or customs of the time. When confronted by ideas that differ from her own (i.e., ideas that were common at the turn of the century) she gets offended and huffy. Does she expect everyone to become instantly enlightened by her mere presence and agree with all of her opinions? Sadly, I think the time-travel genre is not for me, until some clever author can combine actual research with an intelligent protagonist, or at least one with a modicum of common sense.
I love time travel novels and this was a sweet read that kept my interest through to the end. The characters were lively and entertaining in their confusion of life styles from such different times. I enjoy reading about the struggles of the "modern" travelers when they encounter the society of the previous century or even more. Bess did a great job of developing a fast moving story that had plenty of twists and turns in the short read. It is one of those pleasant books that can be stopped and started off and on when you have time on your hands for half an hour or more. Ellie is just what you would expect of a 21st century professor of "Women's Studies" and for her to be translated back into her favorite era was special to watch. I can just imagine what a unique mother and grandmother she would have been in the early 1900's. The interaction of the characters within their historical environment, that they (and we) have casually read about but not really thought of living in, is what keeps me interested. I really enjoyed Ellie's introduction to corsets, elaborate hair styles and large hats, not to mention the restricted interaction between men and women at social gatherings. Robert is a dream guy and who wouldn't want to remain with him if there was nothing pulling you back into the 21st century. But what if there is a guy in modern Chicago, what do you do? Choices, choices...some hard and some not so hard. I am looking forward to reading the other 4 books in this series and hope they have unique characters, situations and a more in depth look at life in the past century. My grandparents were born before 1900 and I was fascinated by their stories of "life back then" as a child. Maybe this is what has fueled my desire to read these time travel stories. Enjoy.
I haven't read too many time travel books, but I think I liked this one the least of the ones I've read. It seemed disjointed. Chunks of Ellie's life were missing and never got filled in. I was unsure more than once about the time the part of the book I was reading was in. I was never clear about whether her original concerns about making a life-long commitment to the hero were resolved. I felt I never got my "train legs" for the ride.

I also didn't care for the way the author kept weaving Ellie's 2013 relationship that she kept trying to leave behind back into the plot. Beyond my perception that dragging this old, stale relationship back into the story disqualified it from being G-rated, it just mucked everything up.

As a side point, I'd hoped to get descriptions of a few places in 1901 Seattle since I lived there for 7 years--in much more recent times, of course. When the author did mention a specific place, she gave almost no description of it. A few times, she talked about a park or a scenic place without naming any specific place; so in that sense, it was a complete let-down.

If I'd had to pay for the book, I would definitely have requested a refund. It just wasn't a satisfying experience for me on any level.
The "Train Through Time" series is a five-book, time travel, science fiction-romance saga. Each of the five books in the series focuses on the story of a different, young woman who gets on a train in the 21st Century, but falls asleep and awakens in the very early years of the 20th Century, penniless and "scandalously" miss-dressed. Leggings, shorts, and yoga pants are not what ladies wore in Edwardian society. In each book, the heroine is rescued from her dilemma by a young man, but the two do not live happily ever after until overcoming some very large obstacles. Although Bess McBride makes little effort to explain the science of the fiction, her exceptional story telling talent overrides any such flaw. The time travel stories are intriguing with tons of mystery, paradox, drama, loss and period detail. You will want to read each book more than once.
