Checking out my backlist of books by Suzanne Enoch and decided to read this one yet again. In many ways it's a fun read about an extremely arrogant duke who has a jaded view of women and life. Called upon by one of his relatives in West Hampshire to come and assist him get his finances and property in order, Greydon Brakenridge, the Duke of Wycliffe, decides that one of the first orders of business is to raise the rent on the local finishing school for young ladies aka "Miss Grenville's Academy."

Grey is a big "Know-it-All" but he soon learns he has met his match with Miss Emma Grenville, Head-Mistress and owner of the Academy. The dialogue between the two is very well written. Once Grey becomes involved with the young women from the school, it is soon obvious to the reader, he has a big heart after all - he only needed some cuties to reawaken his soul. I actually enjoyed the interaction between Grey and the young girls more than Grey's and Emma's love story.

One caveat: I notice that Enoch has a lot of latitude with what she allows her heroes. For example, when Greydon visits New Hamshire to stay with his relatives, he brings along a group of friends - among them, one of his current bed partners - a young woman who is considered good ton? Is it just me, or is this going against most of the rules of acceptability?

The wager that is the basis for this plot was a little ragged and poorly-defined, and the ending was a little anti-climactic. The characters, however, were delightful, and their motivations were plausible enough to suspend my disbelief. So many novels that fall into the category of "romance", focus mainly on only the hero and heroine, which can actually be tiresome. This one had a supporting cast of delightful characters -- funny, distinctive, individual -- that made the book more fun, often hilarious, and the romance less claustrophobic. Too many 'romance' novels have only 2 characters who fall into bed in the second chapter, which leaves less room for fireworks or foreplay. But these two were witty and well-matched opponents to start, which adds much spice to the development of their connection.

Lots of fun, well worth the read. I would read another by this author.
In the beginning I loved Emma and hated Grey. He's traveling with two mistresses and he wants to bed Emma, and thinks she'll go for it? The fact that he hadn't gotten rid of them early on boggled my mind. Then the middle of the book was better, and more intriguing. But towards the end Emma lost her faith in everything and decided the best thing to do would be to run away from the mess one the courtesans began, leaving the poor students with no headmistress to run their school. She doesn't give Grey a chance, and even calls in her friends to help, who really did nothing more than agree with her and say she's in love with Grey. But it was all wrapped up very nicely at the very end. All in all, a book definitely worthy of reading. The two problems are made up for.
This book was great. A solid plot, hilarious cast of characters, and an intriguing romance set the stage for one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. I do believe this series has improved with each installment. My only complaint is that the ending felt a bit rushed and the Duke' s family was not very well explained. I loved the students. They were fabulous. The Duke was charming, Dare was a darling, and the antagonists were awful, as they should be. Emma was lovely and I dearly wish we had gotten to know her a little better. The series is not clean, although everything in the second book happens after marriage, but it is so well done that I believe even the highest stickler would enjoy these books completely. Very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
Greydon Brakenridge, the Duke of Wycliffe, was duty-bound to help his uncle with his money woes. Toward that end, he suggested that his uncle triple his estate's rents. Emma Grenville, headmistress of the finishing school situated on the Duke's uncle's estate, knew that the elevated rent would destroy the goals of her academy, so she protested this rent increase. The Duke had reasons to want the Academy shuttered, and in his arrogance, he suggested a wager between himself and Miss Grenville. If she won, her rent would not be escalated. If he won, the school would be in danger of closing.

Everything about this book is completely implausible, and the cuteness of the students could only go so far to save this story. For me, it just got tedious. A man among a bunch of young girls teaching them about rakes, was wrong on so many levels, and supervised by his lover, was barely palatable in Regency, Victorian, or Contemporary times. To me, it is disappointing to have the headmistress of a school breaking all of her own rules. And it is just gross that she is having sex with intentional actions that are bound to ensure an illegitimate pregnancy just steps away from the young students. Even in our present, more relaxed society, most would deem these actions completely unacceptable, immoral, irresponsible and sickening.

Emma was everything she did not want for her students. She engaged in every kind of behavior that would bring dishonor and ruin to herself, her students, and to her aunt's legacy. Her actions made a mockery of her aunt's gift of the school to ensure that Emma would have a way to take care of herself. A woman who would rather have sex once or twice over her very livelihood, is not a good candidate to be shaping young women's futures. This behavior was especially hard to swallow, because it was explained that at 12 years old, the heroine was thrown in the streets to fend for herself and spent months in a work house.

The whole wager plot was against all rules and mores of any society, and the ultimate in bad business judgment. We are to believe that a person trying to save a school would hinge her total future and that of the school and the students on a reputation-ruining bet. Of course, readers of romance do allow suspension of reality a lot, but this author asks too much.

Just thinking of the Duke talking with girls 12-17 years old about how rakes act and then the next scene is him having sex with their mentor, left me nauseous. Not to mention that he had his previous mistress at his aunt and uncle's home at the same time. Also, why would a 12 year old be in this class with a 17 year old? In most worlds, a 12 year would not have need of this instruction.

The ending was just ludicrous. None of these actions were even remotely believable. And none of these actions would have, in reality, solved any of the problems of the characters in the book. The ending just left me feeling like I wasted my time. This is a sad ending to an otherwise good series.
